The great causeway expidition…

June 19, 2009

Way back in the year 2009 a group of explores set out once again to find the elusive geological oddities of the Antrim Coast.  Long ago when mythical creatures actually existed giants were said to roam these lands.  The destination for this group, like so many other daytrippers and tourists, was the Giants Causeway.

I was among this group of disenchanted wanderers.    Armed this time with a Kershaw Penguin 6×9 camera I set out to capture the magic that once enthralled me.  Like so many great things in life, traveling to the Giants Causeway loses its excitement with each subsiquent installment.  There are only so many times one can look in amazement at a rock that vaguely resembles a boot.

Armed with a very old camera loaded with eight frames of black and white film I had very little expectations.  The trip was more of a necessity than a luxury as the other people had never seen it before and me and Susi had to take them.  On top of all that I also neglected to bring a coat with me as it had looked like a nice day but was still cold as a witch’s teet.  None the less, I set about snapping shots of this unique landscape mostly as a test roll for the Kershaw Penguin.  What resulted was a set of soft and dreamy landscapes.  In the right hands this camera can put out great images that feel like you are discovering them after years in a shoebox the moment you see them.  The 6×9 frame size means you only get 8 pictures so it can be a bit expensive but I think it is well worth it.

Absolutely gorgeous photos. You have inspired me to go look for some 6×7 and 6×9 cameras.
